Awards 1924: Awarded a Bible and five shillings for his design of a school badge for Botshabelo Training College. 1989: Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of the Witwatersrand. 1990: Chevalier dans L`ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the government of the Republic of France. 1991: Vita Award (Gerard Sekoto donated the prize money from this award to the Johannesburg Art Gallery to be used to create a special day at the Gallery for the benefit of children. What became known as ‘Gerard Sekoto Day’ was such a success that the Foundation for the Creative Arts in 1992 funded similar days in memory of Sekoto at art galleries and art centres around South Africa).
